Philstar's latest typhoon news said that the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecast that a typhoon may develop in the Philippine forecast area (PAR) between December 16 and 22.
Based on the storm and low pressure forecast released by PAGASA on December 8, the new storm near the East Sea may affect the Visayas and Southern Luzon of the Philippines.
“Currently, we are not monitoring a tropical storm inside the PAGASA monitoring area during the first forecast period (December 9-15), but we expect that during the second forecast period (week of December 16-22), a low pressure area may develop near the southern part of the tropical storm warning area,” the Philippine weather agency said.
PAGASA's storm forecasters said that a new storm is likely to appear at a medium to small level.
When the new storm enters PAR it will be named Querubin and will be the 17th storm to affect the Philippines this year.
At least six consecutive typhoons entered the Philippines' PAR forecast area from late October to November, causing severe destruction in many places.
PAGASA weather expert Benison Estareja said three weather systems are currently affecting the Philippines but no storms are expected to develop within the next four days.
The northeast monsoon is forecast to bring rains to Northern Luzon, while wind shear is affecting eastern Luzon and the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is expected to affect Mindanao, Palawan and Visayas.
PAGASA weather expert Rhea Torres said on December 9 that based on the latest satellite report, rains will occur in most of Southern Luzon. More areas are expected to be affected by wind shear on December 10.
“Currently, we are not tracking storms outside or within the Philippine forecast area but many parts of the country will receive rains caused by the three weather systems mentioned above,” Rhea Torres noted.
The northeast monsoon is affecting the Cagayan Valley and Cordillera, while Palawan, Visayas and Mindanao are under the influence of the tropical convergence zone.
"The tropical convergence zone is expected to bring cloudy weather to the southern Philippines," noted expert Rhea Torres.
PAGASA experts indicated that the yellow alert is for moderate to heavy rains, or up to 100 mm of rainfall recorded in the provinces of Aurora, Quezon, Camarines, Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Dinagat Islands, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro and Palawan in the previous 24 hours. Heavy rains forced the suspension of classes in some areas in Albay.
