PhilStar's latest storm news, citing a forecast from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), said that at least one to two storms of similar strength to Typhoon Trami (local name Kristine) could appear in December.
“This December, there may be one to two storms entering or developing within the Philippine Forecast Area (PAR),” PAGASA weather expert Grace Castaneda shared.
At least 16 typhoons are expected to hit the Philippines this year, with Typhoon Trami set to be the deadliest.
Regarding the current weather in the Philippines, Grace Castaneda said that wind shear is causing rain in Southern Luzon. Heavy to very heavy rains are forecast to affect the areas of Bicol, Quezon, Mimaropa and Calabarzon. Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon will continue to affect the remaining areas of Luzon.
PAGASA experts confirmed that there are no depressions currently being monitored by PAGASA. Regarding the information that one to two tropical storms may enter the Philippines’ forecast area in December, weather expert Ana Clauren-Jorda told the Inquirer that the public should prepare for the possibility of tropical storms hitting the Philippines during the holiday season.
“One to two storms are likely to enter the forecast area of the Philippines, with a high probability of making landfall or affecting land,” she said.
Jorda also clarified that PAGASA is currently not monitoring any low pressure area or tropical storm that could potentially affect the Philippines in the next 3 to 5 days.
“The public must always be ready and vigilant in case a tropical storm or typhoon is detected in the Philippines,” she added.
According to PAGASA data, the Philippines recorded six tropical storms starting from October: Kristine (international name: Trami), Leon (international name: Kong-rey), Marce (international name: Yinxing), Nika (international name: Toraji), Ofel (international name: Usagi) and Pepito (international name: Man-yi).
According to PAGASA's list of storm names for the 2024 storm season, the next two storm names in this year's storm season will be Querubin and Romina.
ABS-CBN’s latest typhoon bulletin also confirmed that no tropical storms will enter the Philippine forecast area this week. However, PAGASA noted that weak low pressure areas may form along the tropical convergence zone west of Palawan early this week and east of Mindanao over the weekend.
The northeast monsoon is forecast to weaken but continue to affect Northern Luzon. A new cold front will cover most of Luzon on November 8.
Meanwhile, wind shear continues to bring rain to Northern Luzon this week. Light rain is forecast for Northern Luzon on December 2. Rain continues to fall in Babuyan and Batanes from December 3 to 6. Scattered light rain is forecast to cover most of Northern and Central Luzon by November 8.
PAGASA's weather forecast bulletin noted that Metro Manila will be cloudy with possible rain on December 2 and 3 but will be hot and dry from December 4 until the end of the week.
