According to the European - Mediterranean earthquake Center, the first earthquake occurred near Mek'ele city, Tigray province (Ethiopia) at around 7:02 p.m. (local time).
With a strong intensity of 5.3 degrees richter and a focal depth of about 10km, almost all people living in the central areas of Tigray felt the shaking and may have suffered minor to moderate damage.
The EMSC said that the Shaguby area (about 500 people), 8km from the center of the impact, is likely to be affected by moderate shaking, while the Wik'ro (64,000 people, 25km away), Dolo (41,400 people, 30km away) and Mek'ele (457,900 people, 44km away) were assessed to be light.
As for Idaga Hamus (25,400 people, 60km away), Adigrat (121,800 people, 74km away) and Abiy Adi (34,200 people, 93km away), people may only feel the weak shaking.
The RaspberryShake earthquake network recorded the same earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 richter, while the German Center for Geological Sciences Research (GFZ) also reported a magnitude of 5.3 richter.
Also in Tigray province (Ethiopia) on October 11, another 5.5-magnitude earthquake near the town of Wikro occurred at 7:18 p.m. (local time) on October 11, according to the EMSC.
The center of the earthquake was 10km deep and 23km from Wik'ro, so almost all people living in this town could clearly feel the earthquakes.
The German Geological Science Research Center (GFZ) also recorded the same earthquake but with a magnitude of up to 5.7 richter.
