In an article on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the diplomatic sector (August 28, 1945 - August 28, 2025), Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang affirmed that great solidarity is the origin of national strength. During his lifetime, President Ho Chi Minh emphasized: "We must unite to fight for the unity and independence of the Fatherland; we must also unite to build the country".
Right after the country gained independence, Du sent many letters and telegrams to overseas Vietnamese, announcing the victory, thanking for support and calling for the promotion of the tradition of Hong and Lac, uniting, helping each other to stabilize their lives and glorify the Fatherland.
In early 1946 in his Tet greeting for overseas Vietnamese, Uncle Ho wrote: "The Fatherland and the Government always remember our compatriots, like parents remembering their children who are away". That idea became the foundation for the great national unity policy throughout 80 years of Vietnamese diplomacy.
In 1993, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 08-NQ/TW, first affirming that Vietnamese people abroad are an inseparable part of the Vietnamese ethnic community. Next, the Government established a State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In 2004, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 36-NQ/TW on the work of overseas Vietnamese, a document of historical significance, affirming the Party's innovative thinking. In 2015, Directive No. 45-CT/TW continued to implement Resolution 36 in the new situation. In 2021, the Politburo issued Conclusion No. 12-KL/TW, emphasizing the role of overseas Vietnamese in great national unity and the aspiration to build a prosperous and happy country.
The work of overseas Vietnamese people is increasingly implemented systematically, mobilizing the strength of the entire nation. From the "For the Southern District" movement in the 1950s-1960s to the "For the beloved Truong Sa" programs, the spirit of solidarity and attachment of overseas Vietnamese to their homeland is always bright. Every time the country encounters natural disasters or epidemics, overseas Vietnamese respond by donating, sending money and relief goods.
The overseas Vietnamese community now has more than 6 million people in 130 countries and territories. Overseas Vietnamese associations have been strengthened, becoming a bridge of friendship, contributing to preserving culture, tradition and promoting the image of Vietnam.
Amtes are constantly increasing, becoming an important resource for national development. To date, overseas Vietnamese from 35 countries have invested in 421 projects in Vietnam, with a total registered capital of 1.72 billion USD. In the 2021-2024 period, there are 59 projects with a total capital of 118.38 million USD, a sharp increase compared to the previous period. Overseas Vietnamese entrepreneurs are also a bridge to bring Vietnamese agricultural products and goods into the international distribution system, contributing to promoting Vietnamese brands.
The overseas intellectual community with about 600,000 people is a valuable asset. Since 2018, the Vietnam Innovation Network has connected global experts and young scientists, cooperating in implementing many projects in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and renewable energy.
Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang affirmed that entering an era of wealth and prosperity, Vietnamese people at home and abroad continue to be the bond connecting the great national unity bloc. National strength comes not only from tradition, but also from intelligence, creativity and the desire to rise up.
The patriotism, attachment and responsibility of each Vietnamese person will be the decisive resources for the country to break through, integrate and develop sustainably.
