Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed that on October 7, 2024, in Vientiane, Laos, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet - Head of SOM ASEAN Vietnam (ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting) - led the Vietnamese delegation to attend the preparatory meeting for the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related summits.
With the theme “ASEAN: Promoting Connectivity and Resilience”, these summits are an opportunity for leaders to discuss and make strategic decisions on important issues facing ASEAN and the region, notably the development orientation of ASEAN in the next two decades, enhancing strategic autonomy and self-reliance, promoting ASEAN’s central role and strengthening regional connectivity.
The organization, security, reception, and logistics for the summits were planned early by the Lao President, with careful, thorough, and methodical preparation.
More than 20 activities will be held at the Lao National Convention Centre from October 8 to 11, 2024 with the participation of more than 2,000 delegates from ASEAN countries, Timor-Leste, ASEAN partner countries and many international and regional organizations.
It is expected that more than 80 documents will be submitted to leaders for approval and recognition on many areas of current concern such as climate change response, sustainable agriculture, enhancing supply chain connectivity, cybercrime, artificial intelligence, etc.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet and the heads of SOMs of the countries highly appreciated Laos' preparations in all aspects, affirming that they will closely coordinate with the Lao Chair to actively contribute to the overall success of the conferences.
Also at the meeting, Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet and the ASEAN SOM Heads of the countries discussed and evaluated the implementation of ASEAN's initiatives and cooperation priorities in 2024, building the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, implementing the Roadmap to support Timor-Leste to become a full member of ASEAN, strengthening ASEAN's foreign relations and many other issues of common concern.
* On October 8, 2024, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the 28th ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council Meeting, and the 35th ASEAN Coordinating Council (ACC) Meeting will take place to review and complete preparations for the ASEAN Summits, as well as discuss issues of mutual concern.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son will lead the Vietnamese delegation to attend these conferences.
