February 5, China entered the beginning of spring. Previously, many localities across the country recorded unusually warm weather. In the north, including Beijing and Tianjin, the daytime temperature increased to about 10 degrees Celsius. In the south, the common temperature is above 15 degrees Celsius, even in some places up to nearly 20 degrees Celsius.
However, this short warm spell was quickly replaced when a strong cold air mass from the North poured down. From February 6-7, temperatures in central and eastern China are expected to drop from 6-10 degrees Celsius. The northeast region alone has places dropping above 20 degrees Celsius, bringing many localities back to severe cold and harmful cold after only 1 night.
Weather forecast experts say that by dawn on February 8, the zero-degree Celsius equatorial line may deepen southward, reaching northern Fujian and Hunan - a rare occurrence in the early spring period.
This cold air mass moves very quickly, in a north-east direction, the temperature drop is very strong, meeting the standard of strong cold air in many provinces" - Mr. Tran Dao, Chief Forester of the National Meteorological Center of China, assessed.
Not only causing deep cold, the cold air mass also brings heavy rain and widespread snowfall. Many areas in eastern China will witness rain turning into snow or snowfall, some places may experience local blizzards. Further south, widespread rain covers many provinces and cities.
According to Weather China, this bad weather affects more than 15 provinces and cities, right at the peak travel time of the 2026 Lunar New Year. The deep drop in temperature, accompanied by snowfall, is assessed to cause disruption to road, rail and air traffic.
Faced with complicated weather developments, the Ministry of Emergency Management of China has requested central and eastern localities to proactively implement response plans. The focus is placed on ensuring traffic safety, stabilizing power supply and providing timely support to people during the severe cold days on the occasion of the Kitchen Gods.
Meanwhile, in Vietnam, on February 6th, strong cold air is in the north and continues to move south. The Northern region has light rain in some places, the common temperature is 18-21 degrees Celsius.
Around February 7, cold air affects the mountainous and midland areas of the Northern region; then strengthens more strongly in the evening and night of February 7, spreading to the Northern region, North Central region and Central Central region. Wind turns northeast level 3, coastal areas level 3-4.
From the night of February 6th to the morning of February 9th - right before the day of worshiping the Kitchen Gods - Northern and North Central regions will have rain, showers, and thunderstorms in some places; high mountainous areas should be wary of frost and snow.
From the night of February 7-9, the North will be very cold, with severe cold in some mountainous areas; from February 8, the North Central region will be cold, with severe cold in some places.
Lowest temperature: Northern region 10-13 degrees C, mountainous areas 7-10 degrees C, high mountainous areas in some places below 3 degrees C; North Central region 12-15 degrees C.
