Lithuania closes airport due to balloons obstructing airspace

Việt Đức |

On the evening of October 4 (local time), Lithuania suspended flight operations at Vilnius airport due to the detection of a ball risk that obstructed flight.

Accordingly, Vilnius airport announced its closure until 2:45 am (local time), on October 5.

A few hours earlier, Vilnius airport was scheduled to close until 4:30 a.m. (local time), October 5.

According to the information we have, this decision has been made due to the possibility of a series of balloons moving towards Vilnius airport. This incident has affected flights, airport officials said.

The airport recommends that passengers should follow updated information on the website and announcements from airlines.

As a NATO member, Lithuania established a 90km ban in parallel with the country's border with Belarus in August to cope with the situation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) encroaching on the airspace of many other European countries.

Under the no-flying zone, Lithuania even allows the armed forces to automatically respond to any violation.

Lithuania, a strong supporter of Ukraine, has a 679km border with Belarus - a close ally of Russia. The capital Vilnius is located about 30km from the border.

In recent weeks, European aviation has repeatedly fallen into chaos due to the detection of flying objects violating airspace, including UAVs and fighter jets.

The most recent incidents occurred at airports in Copenhagen (denmark) on September 28 and Munich (Germany) on October 4. Both incidents have caused airports to temporarily close.
