On September 6 (local time), according to AFP, at least 5 people died after an Amazon cargo plane skidded off the runway at Miami International Airport, USA, crashed into vehicles and caught fire.
The incident occurred when a Boeing 767-300 aircraft carrying a Prime Air 7598 flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico, landed at Miami airport. The plane then skidded off the runway and crashed into several vehicles near the airport area.
Miami-Dade County Fire Chief Ray Jadallah said 5 people died. 3 others were taken to trauma centers in critical condition, while 2 were treated at a local hospital.
According to Mr. Jadallah, some victims were trapped in vehicles hit by the plane. Technical rescue forces had to conduct a complex rescue operation, while searching for the captain and co-pilot trapped inside the plane.
Images at the scene show thick smoke rising from the blue and white Boeing 767. A series of fire trucks were quickly dispatched to the accident area.
Miami-Dade firefighters mobilized about 60 vehicles and nearly 200 personnel to deploy search, rescue and firefighting operations.
Miami International Airport closed all runways and taxiways after the incident. Authorities recommend passengers to check directly with the airline before arriving at the airport.
Amazon confirmed the plane encountered an incident while trying to land. Amazon spokeswoman Kelly Nantel said the company is coordinating with local authorities to determine the cause and diễn biến of the incident.
The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it has sent an investigation team to the scene. The cause of the accident will be determined by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and NTSB.
Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz described the scene as "a truly tragic scene".
