700 US Marines are expected to arrive in Los Angeles in the next 24 hours.
These Marines belong to Battalion 2, Navy No. 7 in Twentynine Palms, California. On June 8, the US Northern Command affirmed that the forces at these units are in a "readiness to deploy" if the US Department of Defense needs it.
Minutes before the deployment was confirmed, President Donald Trump was asked by ABC News whether he would send US Marines to Los Angeles. Mr. Donald Trump said: "Let's see what happens. I mean, I think we controlled it very well. I think it would be a very bad situation. Everything is going in the wrong direction. But now everything is going in the right direction."
US Marines have been deployed domestically to respond to major disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the September 11, 2001 attacks.
The force is known for being the "front and back" in US military intervention activities abroad, but these soldiers are rarely used for domestic security issues.
