Russia speaks out after the US asks to stay away from Iran

The Kremlin affirmed that Russia will continue to maintain and develop a partnership with Iran after the US called on Moscow to stay away from Tehran.

On September 3, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov spoke out about US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's call regarding Russia-Iran relations, affirming that Moscow will not give up relations with its partners.

It is unlikely that the US can monopolize relations with any country. We have our own partners and friends and will continue to maintain and develop these friendly and partnership relations," Mr. Peskov declared.

The above statement was made after Mr. Bessent called on Russia to "stay away" from Iran. The US Treasury Secretary said that Moscow should not intervene more deeply in relations with Tehran.

The call came after Russian President Vladimir Putin's statement that Moscow would support Tehran.

Russia and Iran have expanded cooperation in recent years. The two sides promote relations in many fields, including economy, energy, transportation and defense.

In January 2025, Russia and Iran signed the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement, laying the foundation for strengthening bilateral cooperation in many fields.

Relations between the two countries are also being noted in the context of Iran's pressure from the US. The US has repeatedly imposed sanctions on Iran, while Russia maintains relations with Iran and opposes unilateral pressure policies.

In his latest statement, the Kremlin spokesman emphasized Moscow's general principle of relations with partners.

Accordingly, Russia believes that each country has the right to decide its own foreign relations and should not allow another country to monopolize the establishment of relations with it.

Mr. Peskov's statement is a direct response to the call from the US, and also shows that Moscow has not shown signs of changing relations with Tehran.
