Germany ends military advisory mission in Kurdistan
According to Xinhua news agency, Germany has now ended its military advisory mission in the autonomous Kurdistan region in Iraq, ending many years of operations within the framework of the US-led international coalition against the Islamic State (IS) organization.
The mission completion ceremony was held at Erbil International Airport. The Kurdistan regional government acknowledged Germany's role in supporting the Peshmerga forces to deal with IS.
Germany's withdrawal of forces takes place as Iraq prepares to complete the process of withdrawing international alliance forces on September 30. Baghdad is expected to move from a cooperation mechanism within the alliance framework to bilateral security relations with member countries.
The US-led international coalition was established in 2014 to support Iraqi security forces against IS. After IS lost control of its territory in Iraq in 2017, Baghdad repeatedly called for the end of the coalition's military mission.
