Trump says US destroys 28 ships in the Strait of Hormuz

On September 2 (local time), according to TASS news agency, US President Donald Trump said that the country's armed forces destroyed 28 ships in the Strait of Hormuz on the night of September 1 and declared that the US is controlling this strategic shipping route.

Sources quoted Mr. Trump as saying that these ships were attacked by the US in the context that the US believes Iran is seeking to deploy naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier, on August 31, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that US airstrikes targeting Iranian territory were carried out to prevent the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from deploying naval mines in the strait.

TASS believes that Mr. Trump may be referring to torpedo ships when talking about 28 destroyed ships.

Currently, Iran has not commented on the above information.

US declares destruction of Iran's new weapons

Also related to US-Iran tensions, Mr. Trump said that the US military has destroyed Iran's new weapon systems near the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the US President, Iran is seeking to restore radar and missile systems, including defensive systems and attack-capable systems. Mr. Trump said the US discovered and destroyed these systems when they were near completion.

CENTCOM previously announced that the US conducted a series of attacks targeting Iran. Iranian media reported many explosions along the southern coast of the country, on Qeshm Island and some cities.

The source quoted the Iranian Red Crescent Society - a humanitarian organization responsible for emergency relief and relief in this country - as saying that at least 5 people were killed and 68 injured in a US attack on a wedding venue in Sirik district.

Norway detains Russian research vessel

In another development, Norwegian authorities have temporarily detained the Russian research vessel Professor Molchanov in the Svalbard archipelago at the request of the Ukrainian company Naftogaz.

The Nord-Troms and Senja District Courts on August 31 (local time) issued a decision to apply temporary measures to the ship. According to the Svalbard authorities, the Professor Molchanov ship is anchored in Barentsbourg and is not allowed to leave its current position until a relevant decision is made.

This measure is related to the enforcement of an arbitration ruling on Naftogaz's assets in Crimea. The Professor Molchanov began to carry regular cargo and passenger trips to Svalbard from June 2025, with the first trip from Murmansk taking place in March 2026.
