On January 17, the Russian Ministry of Defense released a series of images and videos recording attacks by first-person unmanned aerial vehicles (FPVs) carried out by the elite Rubicon unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) unit targeting Ukrainian forces.
According to the announcement, the destroyed targets include a US-made Humvee armored vehicle, many Ukrainian UAVs, ground robot systems, communication equipment, electronic warfare, and a bunker and temporary deployment point for Kiev soldiers.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said that these attacks took place in the area near the town of Krasny Liman, belonging to the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), which has witnessed fierce fighting in recent weeks.
Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov emphasized that Russian forces are continuing the campaign to gain control of Krasny Liman. According to him, if this area is controlled, the Russian army will create conditions to besiege Slavyansk - a key logistics center of the Ukrainian army on the eastern front.
The Rubicon unit was established under the direction of Minister Belousov in August 2024, but was only widely announced a few months later. This is a force specializing in testing and deploying attack UAVs, including models carrying explosives believed to be integrated with artificial intelligence to increase accuracy and combat effectiveness.
According to Russian military analysts, Rubicon plays the role of a "battlefield laboratory", where new UAV technologies are directly tested before being replicated to other units. This approach helps Moscow significantly shorten the time to bring technology from testing to combat.
In September last year, the US magazine Forbes described Rubicon as one of the most effective forces on the battlefield, arguing that this unit had significantly expanded the lethal zone, causing great difficulties for logistics and deployment of forces in Ukraine.
Russia's continuous announcement of UAV attacks in recent times shows the increasingly prominent role of drone warfare in the Ukraine conflict. In the context that both sides are promoting drone use, the technology race in the skies of the battlefield is predicted to be even more fierce in the near future.
