Ukraine attacked a thermal power plant in Moscow by drones on November 23, causing a major fire and cutting off heat for thousands of Russian people, marking one of Kiev's largest attacks on a power plant deep inside Russia.
Ukrainian drones attacked the Shatura power plant, about 120km east of the Kremlin, said Andreivorobyov, governor of the Moscow region.
"Some drones were destroyed by air defense forces,"vorobyov said. Some fell into the factory. A fire broke out at the facility". Three transformers at the power plant caught fire.
The Shatura Power Plant, one of Russia's oldest, was established after the Bolshevik revolution and now uses mostly natural gas. The Shatura region has about 33,000 people.
A local resident said that the area does not have a heating system. The temperature in this area is almost freezing.
vorobyov said that backup power has been turned on and mobile heating systems are being deployed to the area. "All efforts are being made to restore heat supply in time," he said.
On the same day, November 23, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that it had shot down 75 Ukrainian drones, including 36 in the Black Sea and several in the Moscow area. Russia's Vnukovo Airport has suspended flights.
Kiev has so far focused on trying to disable Russia's refineries, terminals and crude pipelines.
Ukraine has also attacked several power and thermal facilities in Russian-controlled areas and areas of Russia bordering Ukraine, but has so far not caused major damage to power and thermal stations serving Moscow and the surrounding area, which has a population of more than 22 million people.
The attack occurred while Russia continuously bombed Ukraine's power and heat infrastructure. In recent weeks and months, many areas of Ukraine have been without power and heat due to Russian attacks.
