Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen on July 8 rejected US President Donald Trump's new statement that Greenland should be controlled by the US, affirming that issues related to Greenland are under the authority of Denmark and the Greenland government, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Accordingly, when asked about President Trump's latest statement, President Stubb emphasized, "issues related to Greenland completely belong to Denmark".
Similarly, Secretary of State Valtonen also rejected Mr. Trump's view, while affirming that Finland always unconditionally supports Denmark's territorial integrity.
According to Ms. Valtonen, the Greenland issue needs to be resolved through existing defense and security mechanisms, rather than through territorial claims.
She pointed out that there are currently 2 important processes related to Arctic security. In which, Denmark and the US are exchanging views on the possibility of expanding bilateral defense cooperation agreements. In addition, NATO is promoting efforts to strengthen security in the Arctic region, including Greenland.
In Finland, we understand very well that the Arctic is a much larger region than just Greenland. Focus on these 2 processes. Their results will bring good solutions and be sufficient to meet the requirements, including for Mr. Donald Trump," the Danish Foreign Minister emphasized.
Previously, on July 7, on the sidelines of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, US President Donald Trump stated before a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that Greenland "should be controlled by the US, not Denmark".
Greenland is an autonomous territory belonging to the Kingdom of Denmark. However, President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire for the US to control this island.
