The Pentagon has strongly criticized Netflix's new military drama about a gay man joining the US Navy, saying it is a product to promote "woke garbage" - going against the military spirit. The film was released in the context of President Donald Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth launching a campaign to remove "woke culture" from the US military.
The spokeswoman for the Ministry of War, Ms. Kingsley Wilson, told the press that the agency did not support Netflix's " generational agenda". She emphasized: "We will not compromise on standards, unlike Netflix, where the board continuously produces and disseminates thucadcast to the audience and children". Ms. Wilson said the Pentagon is currently focusing on rescovering the fighting spirit in the military.
According to Ms. Wilson, the standard in the US military is disliction, unity and gender neutrality, because the weight of a lifebuoy or a person that needs to be carried away does not care whether you are male, female, gay or transgender.
Last month, Minister of War Hegseth announced new personnel standards, affirming that soldiers must meet the physical requirements of "men's level" to be able to cope with life-threatening situations. He said that standards must be consistent, regardless of gender and at a high level otherwise, it is no longer a standard. In February, Mr. Hegseth also denied it, saying that the slogan "Diversification is power" was "the saddest thing in military history".
The US military has faced a personnel shortage for years, with a shortage of 15,000 personnel in 2023 - the deepest since the military service regime was abolished in 1973.
Many Republicans believe that this situation stems from the military prioritizing diversification rather than being ready to fight, discouraging young people. A 2021 report released by the Republicans in the Senate Military Commission also said that the US Navy focuses on awakened illusion and equality rather than victory in war.
