The Malaysian military has announced the establishment of two monitoring groups deployed in Thailand and Cambodia to monitor the recent ceasefire.

The information was given by the Commander-in-Chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces - Mr. Mohd Nizam Bin Haji Jaffar - during his visit to Cambodia on July 29.

Mr. Mohd Nizam said that the goal of the working trip was to ensure that the monitoring and implementation of the ceasefire agreement was carried out effectively and with specific results. The two observation groups will be deployed in each country, led by Malaysian military personnel, and will start their mission on July 29, after the ceasefire took effect from 0:00 on the same day.

General Vong Pisen - Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Army - highly appreciated Malaysia's role in promoting regional peace. He welcomed Malaysia's sending of observers to support the monitoring and verification of the implementation of the agreement, and emphasized the importance of an independent observation mechanism, towards maintaining sustainable peace and clear responsibility among all parties.

Cambodian Defense Minister tea seiha has previously mentioned the possibility of inviting diplomatic delegations and foreign military personnel in Cambodia to participate in field observation in the border area. This proposal aims to enhance transparency in the implementation of the ceasefire.

Mr. Lim Menghour - leader of the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee of the Cambodian National Assembly - emphasized the need for an international monitoring mechanism to ensure that the provisions reached at the meeting in Malaysia are seriously implemented. He called this a key factor to maintain trust and stability in the border area between the two countries.

The fighting had earlier broken out on the morning of July 24 near the Ta Moan Thom temple area, then spread to many areas along the Thai-Cambodian border. This is the most serious conflict between the two countries in more than a decade, killing 38 people, including 25 in Thailand and 13 in Cambodia.

The ceasefire was signed on July 28, after talks in Malaysia under the coordination of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. According to the agreement, the military leaders of Thailand and Cambodia agreed not to deploy additional forces or mobilize soldiers in the border area to ensure the ceasefire is maintained seriously.
