The decision was passed just a few hours after lawmakers from various parties submitted a proposal to remove Dina Boluarte, citing losing moral capacity. The vote took place overnight and was approved with a rare majority.
Less than an hour later, Jose Jeri - National Assembly Chairman and member of the conservative Party dos dos Peru, was sworn in at the National Assembly headquarters, becoming the 7th President of Peru since 2016.
In his first speech in his new position, Jeri, 38, emphasized that fighting crime and ensuring security will be a top priority for the new government. The main enemy is on the road criminal gangs. We must fight against criminals," he said.
Outside the National Assembly building in Lima, crowds gathered to celebrate, waved flags, sang and danced. Many believe that Boluarte may seek asylum at the Ecuadorese Embassy, where security forces are being deployed.
In her farewell recorded at the Presidential Palace, Dina Boluarte said: During my term, I have always called for solidarity, warning that the decision will affect the stability of Perus democracy.
According to the surveys, Boluarte's support rate ranges from 2-4%, making her one of the least popular leaders in the world. She was accused of abusing her position for profit, owning many undeclared assets, including expensive Rolex watches. However, Ms. Boluarte denied all allegations.
Boluarte's deposition marks a new chapter in Peru's long-running political crisis, where three former presidents are still in custody.
The parliament has repeatedly considered the proposal to remove Ms. Boluarte, but this is the first time the proposal has been approved with the support of all right-wing parties, which had previously sided with her.
Among them are the People's Power Party (Fuerza Popular) of Keiko Fujimori - daughter of the late President Alberto Fujimori, and the People's Popular renewal Party (Popular Renewal) of Rafael Lopez. These are two characters predicted to run for president in April 2026.
Boluarte took power in December 2022 after her predecessor Pedro Castillo - a president of the rural teacher community - was arrested for plotting to dissolve the National Assembly. However, her government also quickly encountered large-scale protests, especially in rural areas and local communities. Human rights groups have accused her government of using excessive force, killing dozens.
In July, Boluarte continued to cause controversy by doubling the president's salary, sparking a new wave of criticism as the Peruvian economy is still struggling to recover.
