Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said on Venezuelan national television channel Television that the death toll in the strong earthquake that occurred in this country has increased to 3,811 people, and 16,740 others were injured.
Mr. Jorge Rodríguez said that the disaster also left 17,907 people homeless. 190 buildings were completely destroyed and 856 other structures were seriously damaged.
During the search and rescue process, functional forces successfully rescued 6,462 people. More than 27,000 people were treated at hospitals and medical facilities.
The Venezuelan government has deployed emergency relief operations, supported 86,794 affected households and distributed 9,603 tons of food to people in affected areas.
The earthquake occurred late on June 24 (local time), with two strong tremors with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 respectively, only about 40 seconds apart. The epicenters of the two earthquakes were about 10km apart in Yaracuy state, central Venezuela.
After the main earthquake, this area recorded more than 1,000 aftershocks, causing many difficulties for rescue and recovery efforts.
