While the US is still blockading Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz, as the fighting has resumed between the US and Iran as well as spread to many other countries in the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf region, Iran and Oman are negotiating with each other on maritime security mechanisms in the Strait of Hormuz. The two sides have exchanged their recommendations.
This move by both is essentially a form of solution experimentation. They focus on 3 contents: long-term opening of the strait, strait maritime management and fee collection for ships passing through the strait.
The 37km wide Strait of Hormuz separates Iran and Oman. The northern sea route is within Iranian territorial waters and the southern route is within Oman's territorial waters. Both sides pursue many strategic and tactical calculations with the experimentation of this solution.
If a solution is found, Iran will be able to turn the matter related to the Strait of Hormuz into a private matter between Iran and Oman, pushing the US out of this region, forcing the US to both end the blockade of the strait and Iranian ports and ensure security for the entire region, meaning it is no longer possible to attack Iran. This means that the US is losing a space to show its military strength while Iran still maintains this strategic card. A solution agreement with Oman also helps Iran prevent the US and Oman from colluding to cause more difficulties for Iran in the Strait of Hormuz.
A separate solution agreement with Iran on the Strait of Hormuz helps Oman avoid being affected by the conflict between the US and Iran, while Iran's relationship with the US is not negatively affected. Clearing this strait also gives Iran prestige and political security and economic influence in the world.
Whether the test is successful or not depends on whether the two sides compromise enough to reach an agreement with each other and whether the US is willing to be pushed out of this game or not.
