On July 21, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia was ready to discuss the organization of talks between President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump if Trump attended celebrations in Beijing in September.
However, this is not a precondition for the meeting between the two leaders, but according to Mr. Peskov, this is just a favorable opportunity for the two sides to discuss how to organize this much-anticipated event.
In an interview, Peskov said: "If Mr. Trump were there, of course, we could not rule out the possibility of the issue of the suitability of holding a meeting."
Previously, on July 20, Peskov also affirmed that the meeting between Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin is a certain event in the future, but noted that this will require a lot of preparation and the time is not yet come.
The last time Mr. Putin and Mr. Trump met in person was at the 2018 Russia-US Summit in Helsinki, Finland.
Mr. Peskov's statement came as China prepared to organize a parade on September 3, in Beijing to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Japaneseth occupation victory.
Up to now, President Vladimir Putin has accepted the invitation, while President Donald Trump has not yet responded officially.
Meanwhile, Beijing has recently been accused by international media of positioning itself as a place to host a tripartite summit, including Russia, the US and China.
This speculation is said to have appeared since President Trump held a phone call with General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping in June. At the time, Mr. Trump said that he had been invited to visit China but did not disclose a specific time.
Not stopping there, Beijing also positioned itself as a neutral side in the Ukrainian conflict.
Foreign Minister Vuong Nghi once called on relevant parties to pursue a "fair, long-term and binding" peace agreement, prioritizing the resolution of conflicts through political dialogue.
