The serious accident occurred at 8:00 a.m. on September 16 at the intersection between the railway and Clevely Road, about 2 km from Bunnythorpe village, New Zealand's North Island, according to Stuff.co.nz.
Police officer Phil Ward, a local police officer, said the bus carrying students was en route to Feiding High School and tried to cross the railway line before crashing into the train, despite warning lights and bells. The female bus driver died at the scene and a number of students on the bus were slightly injured.
The principal of Nathan Stewart of Feilding High School said that of the 40 students in the car, about 25 were students of the school.
The bus was traveling from Palmerston North to Feilding, said Nathan, adding that the six slightly injured students were taken to the hospital, while the other students were picked up by their parents.
Head and manager of the St John Manawatū area, Jeff Mabbett, said that the front of the bus was severely damaged, but fortunately most of the students escaped from the bus themselves and were safe after the accident.
As for the train, according to information from the railway company, it was only slightly damaged, the train driver was the only person on the train when the accident occurred. He had previously said he had blown the whistle. The speed of the train when running through this area is 80 km/h.
