Three Valencia fans were sentenced to eight months in prison and banned from the stadium for two years for discrimination against Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr in May 2023.
The incident occurred in Real's 0-1 loss to Valencia at Mestalla Stadium, causing a stir in public opinion after Vinicius Jr discovered an individual in the crowd with discriminatory behavior.
The match was suspended and Vinicius later criticized the Spanish authorities' handling, saying "racism is normal in La Liga," while the tournament called for more power to address the problem.
On Monday, three fans were convicted of practicing a lack of respect under Article 173.1 of the Spanish Penal Code.
They were sentenced to 12 months in prison, reduced to 8 months, according to the principle of reducing sentences for defendants who accept criminal responsibility. They have also been banned from playing for three years, reduced to two years for the same reason.
La Liga praised the verdict, saying it was the first time such a verdict had been made in Spain.
