The 33rd SEA Games is a key task
At a professional reporting session with Director of the Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet (September 17 in Hanoi), head coach of the Vietnam Shooting Team - Mr. Nghiem Viet Hung said that the whole team is holding a stable spirit.
The Vietnam shooting team will select the best athletes to participate in the 33rd SEA Games after the 2025 National Championship. The 33rd SEA Games mission plays the most important role this year for the whole team, Mr. Nghiem Viet Hung once reported. Vietnamese shooting athletes aim to win the SEA Games 33 Gold Medal.
The Vietnamese shooting team will participate in the 2025 Asian Championship in Kazakhstan (August 2025). Coaches identify the Asian tournament as bringing many professional values. However, this is considered a stepping stone to prepare for the 33rd SEA Games. The last time shooting took place at the Southeast Asian Games was the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam in 2022. This sport will be held at the 33rd SEA Games in Cambodia in 2023. At the 31st SEA Games, we won 7 Gold Medals in shooting (including 2 Gold Medals in flying disc shooting, 5 Gold Medals in shooting).
After nearly 4 years, the Vietnam Shooting Team hopes to win Gold Medals in some key events at the 33rd SEA Games. The failure at the 30th SEA Games in 2019 is a lesson for the Vietnam Shooting Team to learn from. At that time, Vietnamese sports did not win the Gold Medal in shooting despite the squad having shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh.
The competition of the SEA Games is still very important. Therefore, each key shooter of the team must practice to best develop their professional skills," said a representative of the shooting team's coaching staff.
Start calculating for ASIAD 20
Nearly 300 shooters participating in the 2025 National Championship are those with the best expertise in rifle, gun (shooting) and flying disc shooting. The Vietnam shooting team has trained more than 40 shooters since the beginning of 2025. All players are participating in the 2025 National Championship. In fact, the Coaching Board has built key athletes to focus on training to compete for high achievements from national players.
Surprise in domestic tournaments is very unlikely because the best shooters are players.
The 33rd SEA Games will organize 6 men's events, 8 women's events and 2 team mixed events of the shooting competition. In addition, this sport has contents for shooting flying discs.
Many events at the 33rd SEA Games will be included in the 20th ASIAD program in 2026 such as 10m air handles for men and women; 10m air guns for men and women; 25m rapid- firing handles for men, 25m women's sports handles... Vietnamese sports have a group of strong shooters in the above events such as Trinh Thu Vinh, Le Thi Mong Tuyen, Pham Quang Huy, Ha Minh Thanh...
The athletes have participated in the 2025 Asian Championship and are expected to continue participating in the 33rd SEA Games for high-performance competition. However, the long-term goal of the Vietnam Shooting Team is to defend the Gold Medal at the 20th ASIAD. Shooter Pham Quang Huy won the Gold Medal for the men's 10m air pistol at the 19th ASIAD. All shooters are carefully prepared for this arena taking place in Japan in 2026.
According to the Vietnam Shooting Team, the team will participate in the 2025 Southeast Asian Championship in Thailand in October. Shooters who have high achievements at the 2025 National Championship will have the opportunity to compete in Thailand. We will grasp more about the professional preparation of many opponents before the 33rd SEA Games at the 2025 Southeast Asian Championship. After the 33rd SEA Games, the coaching staff will conduct professional preparation for the 20th ASIAD because the time is very close.
