Hosting international tournaments, a breakthrough opportunity for Vietnamese sports

Hoài Việt |

Vietnam continuously hosts international sports tournaments, opening up opportunities to improve athletes' qualifications, affirming its organizational capacity and increasing its position on the regional and world sports map.

Many international awards choose Vietnam as the venue

This year, sports fans will have the opportunity to watch valuable international tournaments held at home. In May in Bac Ninh, Vietnam will be the host of the 2026 Southeast Asian Judo Championship. Also in May, we will organize the 2026 World Beach wrestling Championship and the 2026 AFC U23, U17 Championship wrestling tournament in Da Nang.

In July, the 2026 Southeast Asian Karate Championship takes place in Ninh Binh and the 2026 Asian pencak silat Championship is contested in Dong Nai. In volleyball, fans will be able to watch international tournaments at home including the first leg of the women's SEA V.League 2026 and the Men's ASEAN Army Volleyball Tournament 2026 (August, Hanoi).

At the beginning of April, Vietnam organized the PPA Hanoi Cup 2026 international pickleball tournament in My Dinh (Hanoi) and attracted all world-renowned players to participate in the competition.

Expressing his opinion when deciding to host the 2026 World Beach Wrestling Championship, a representative of the Professional Committee of the Vietnamese Wrestling Federation informed: "We have researched very carefully about the organization of the international tournament. Vietnamese wrestling being the host of a tournament of great scale is a good opportunity for Vietnamese athletes to compete against top opponents right at home. From the international tournaments being organized, the World Wrestling Federation and the Asian Wrestling Federation will see Vietnam's organizational capacity".

This year is the 2nd consecutive time the Asian pencak silat Federation has chosen Vietnam as the host of the Asian Championship. Exactly 1 year ago, we hosted the 2025 Asian Championship in Ha Tinh.

Representative of pencak silat (Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports) - Ms. Tu Thi Le Na acknowledged that Vietnam's capacity to organize international tournaments is not inferior to countries in the region and continent. The success of the 2025 Asian Championship has been proof for the Asian pencak silat Federation to continue to trust Vietnam to organize this year's tournament.

The value of Vietnamese sports

What will Vietnamese sports receive when it is the host of international tournaments? This question has been raised by many professionals every time they calculate and build a plan to apply for hosting an international tournament at home.

Last year, the Organizing Committee of the 2025 National Triathlon Championship combined the organization of the 2025 World Triathlon Cup in the competition program. From this tournament, Vietnamese triathlon athletes themselves have been able to test themselves against strong opponents in the world.

Representatives of the Vietnam Triathlon Federation assessed that the professional value and quality of the National Triathlon Championship have been significantly increased by the level and achievements of Vietnamese athletes accumulated well when competing with international opponents.

At a working session with 44 Federations and Associations of Sports in March this year, representatives of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports said that efforts to develop sports from social organizations. Vietnamese sports towards raising professional value actually require investment and international tournaments. Therefore, many Federations and Sports Associations of Vietnam are considering the opportunity to host international tournaments right in Vietnam.

Representatives of the Vietnam Judo Federation said: "The issue of improving the expertise of athletes is always the top requirement. However, for the sport to develop well, valuable tournaments are also needed to be organized. Surely, the 2026 Southeast Asian Championship will be an opportunity for more people to cheer for Vietnamese judo.
