Main karate athlete Hoang Thi My Tam was forced to leave ASIAD 20 early due to injury.
She suffered a torn cruciate ligament injury during professional training.
Recently, the Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports organized for Hoang Thi My Tam to undergo surgery to treat injuries at Central Military Hospital 108.
Currently, the female martial artist is staying at the Vietnam Sports Hospital to recover after surgery.
Hoang Thi My Tam is one of the talents of Vietnamese karate in recent years. She competed in ASIAD 19 in China in 2023.
In recent years, My Tam has been a member contributing many international results in the women's kumite (combat) team.
This martial artist has won gold medals in women's team kumite at the Asian Championships in 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025.
This year, My Tam won a bronze medal in women's team kumite at the 2026 Asian Championships and also won a gold medal at the 2026 Southeast Asian Championships.
The coaching staff of the Vietnamese karate team said that My Tam's absence was force majeure, however, the collective of martial artists is still focusing on preparing with the highest spirit towards ASIAD 20.
Currently, the kumite fighter is training domestically, while the female kata (performance) fighter is training in Japan to prepare for ASIAD 20.
