Grandmaster Le Quang Liem will not participate in the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand because chess only has 1 event for men's chess. The Vietnamese chess team plans to select grandmasters Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Le Tuan Minh to compete.
host Thailand will organize 8 chess events at the 33rd SEA Games. In which, chess has 2 events: rapid men's chess pair and rapid women's chess pair. The remaining events are for the maruk flag (4 sets of medals) and the Asean flag (2 sets of medals).
Players Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Le Tuan Minh are considered by experts to have good expertise in fast-paced chess. In addition to them, the Vietnam Chess Team plans to select players Pham Le Thao Nguyen and Vo Thi Kim Phung to participate in the upcoming women's rapid chess doubles event in Thailand.
At the 32nd SEA Games held in Cambodia in 2023, chess was held but only medals for maruk and chess were competed away.
At the 31st SEA Games held in 2022 in Vietnam, Vietnamese male chess players won gold medals in chess for standard chess (Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son), light chess (Le Tuan Minh), fast chess (Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son), double chess (Le Quang Liem, Le Tuan Minh) and double chess (Le Quang Liem, Tran Tuan Minh).
