VAR was first used at the 2018 World Cup. VAR's task is to support referees in deciding on 4 major issues on the field: Recognizing goals, decisions on 11m fans, decisions on red cards, determining errors.
Up to now, that is, after the first 3 days of competition, VAR has supported the referee the most in the 11m penalty decisions. These are situations where the referee has not yet made a decision, and the player opposes them before the referee receives a signal from VAR.
Although the presence of VAR aims to limit mistakes in European tournaments and the Confederations Cup, at the 2018 World Cup, the referee had 6 blasts to 11m in just 3 days. On the 3rd day alone, there were 5 11m fines blown in just 4 matches.
The 11m penalties are:
Cristiano Ronaldo in the Portugal - Spain match (scoring)
Antoine Griezmann in the France - Australia match after watching VAR (scoring)
Miles Jedinak in the Australia - France match (scored)
Lionel Messi in the Argentina - Iceland match (losed)
Christian Cueva in the Peru - Denmark match after watching VAR (failed)
Luka Modric in the Croatia - Nigeria match (scored)
