The decision was made just a few days after he accepted to lead Ulsan Hyundai club, the reigning K.League 1 champion.
Mr. Shin was appointed as Vice President of the KFA from April this year, as one of five personnel holding senior positions in the 55th Executive Board. During this term, he served under the direction of Chairman Chung Mong-gyu. In addition to Mr. Shin, coach Park Hang-seo also participated in supporting the national teams.
However, after signing a contract with Ulsan Hyundai, Mr. Shin said he could not take on two roles at the same time and had asked to withdraw from the KFA. He is scheduled to make his debut on the coaching bench on August 9 in the match between Ulsan Hyundai and Jeju SK in round 25 of K.League 1.
This comeback ends Mr. Shin's 4,634-day absence from the Korean national championship. In the context of Ulsan's decline in performance and falling to 7th place after 24 rounds, the club's leadership has parted ways with coach Kim Pan-gon to put their hopes on the experience of the coach born in 1970.
Mr. Shin was a star of Seongnam FC, where he played more than 400 matches and won 6 K.League titles. After retiring, he began his coaching career and helped Seongnam win the AFC Champions League in 2010.
At the national team level, he led Korea to participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics, the 2017 U20 World Cup and left his mark with a 2-0 victory over Germany at the 2018 World Cup.
From 2019 to early 2024, Mr. Shin worked in Indonesia, helping the team from the archipelago reach many historical milestones, such as the first time entering the 3rd qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup or the 2024 U23 Asian Semi-final.
