The strength of Vietnamese Sports at the 33rd SEA Games

MINH PHONG |

Vietnamese sports achieved impressive results at the 31st and 32nd SEA Games with strong sports. However, the upcoming Congress in Thailand at the end of the year is expected to bring many challenges.

At the 31st SEA Games (2022) at home, Vietnamese sports won first place overall with 205 Gold Medals, 125 Silver Medals and 116 Bronze Medals. Of which, the 5 sports that brought home the most Gold Medals were athletics (22), weight (17), swimming (11), diving (10) and wushu (10).

After that, 1 year, at the 32nd SEA Games held in Cambodia, Vietnamese sports continued to successfully defend the No. 1 position with 136 Gold Medals, 105 Silver Medals and 114 Bronze Medals. diving, weightlifting, and athletics continue to be a "gold mine" when all bring home 12 Gold Medals or more.

Through the two most recent Congresses, this is also the basis for the sports industry to set targets for the upcoming 33rd SEA Games. Initially, Vietnamese sports are aiming to win 75 to 85 Gold Medals. However, this is only a reference figure, because there is still a need to determine the specific contents as well as evaluate from the training process of each sport.

In the latest meeting (21.5), the Vietnam Sports Department grasped the training situation and the preparation of the subjects towards the Southeast Asia arena. Currently, Vietnamese sports have completed the registration of the number of subjects and the number of contents, but has not been announced to ensure the professional tactics of each subject. At this time, the plan of preparation and achievement targets has also been reported to the leadership of the Department of Sports.

According to the official announcement of host Thailand, the 33rd SEA Games will host 50 sports with a total of 547 sets of medals. In particular, the strengths of Vietnamese sports such as football, athletics, wushu, swimming, boxing, gymnastics, weightlifting, cloud golf, jujitsu... are still organized. In addition, two other sports, shooting and archery, will return (SEA Games 32 will not be held). Therefore, we are able to compete for medals in these events.

Regarding football, the nearest futsal content was held at the main congress, the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam. At that time, the Vietnamese South Vietnamese Futsal team won a bronze medal, recruiting female futsal to win silver medals. Over the past 2 years, Futsal Vietnam has made a clear progress and this is the basis for trusting the medal color at the upcoming SEA Games. But above all, fans are waiting for the gold medal of men's football, after the 32nd SEA Games.

In addition, strength sports such as athletics, weightlifting, shooting, archery, cloud bridge, wushu... are practicing very actively. In addition to domestic training, some sports also plan to participate in international tournaments to compete and rub shoulders to maintain performance. For example, the Vietnam Athletics Team participating in the Asian Championship, the Shooting Team participating in the World Cup or the Team that just returned from the Southeast Asian Championship...

However, the upcoming SEA Games are expected to bring many difficulties and challenges for Vietnamese sports, especially when countries in the region such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and host Thailand have all prepared carefully since last year. In particular, Thailand is determined to demand the top spot from Vietnam.

The host country Thailand has prepared carefully and aimed for specific goals in terms of medal achievements in the participating events. Therefore, the competition for predicted achievements is very fierce" - a representative of the Vietnam Olympic Committee once shared.
