Focus on winning Gold Medals in key sports
Vietnam's high-performance sports have carefully calculated based on professional forecasts and selected 17 spearhead sports for investment, including athletics, swimming, shooting, gymnastics, weightlifting, boxing, taekwondo, cycling, archery, badminton, judo, physical education, rowing, wushu, cloud golf and karate. Athletes of these sports will participate in the 33rd SEA Games, with great expectations from Vietnamese sports for creating breakthrough achievements.
Vietnam Sports has been developing an investment plan for key sports and key events to prepare for the 2026-2046 Olympics and ASIAD. The number of key sports will be decided after calculating and selecting from the 17 spearhead sports mentioned above.
In addition, the medal results that each core athlete of these 17 sports will win at the upcoming 33rd SEA Games will be the basis for their expertise to be selected to receive a focus on investment according to the long-term roadmap through each cycle towards the Olympic and ASIAD arenas.
We need to see the development of continental and world sports in recent years. The Southeast Asian Sports Council has directed more specifically the organization of many sports and events under the Olympic and ASIAD programs taking place at the SEA Games.
However, Vietnamese sports need to focus on important sports and events to have a long way to achieve the best results at the Olympics and ASIAD, said sports expert Nguyen Hong Minh (former Director of the Department of High Performance Sports 1, General Department of Physical Education and Sports).
Opportunity to be in the top 3
Regarding the question of Vietnam's sports ability to be in the top group at the 33rd SEA Games, many experts believe that if there is high preparation and determination, Vietnamese coaches and athletes can completely achieve this goal.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has set a goal for Vietnamese sports to maintain its position in the top 3 leading countries at SEA Games 33. In the Conference of Summary of work in 2024 and implement the 2025 task of the Vietnam Department of Physical Training and Sports (December 2024), the sports industry reported on professional preparation for the 33 SEA Games 33.
The tasks and solutions to improve the performance of athletes preparing to participate in the 33rd SEA Games are specifically and in detail.
At the 33rd SEA Games, host Thailand will compete in 50 sports with a total of 574 sets of medals. Vietnamese sports are not expected to participate in about 24 sports (including 154 events) of these because they are not a strength.
However, with a team of coaches and athletes who are training intensively in all national sports teams, Vietnamese sports managers have a basis for professional practice to believe in the ability to achieve the best results.
Head of the High Performance Sports Department (Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports) - Mr. Hoang Quoc Vinh once said that the Vietnamese sports teams will strive to compete to achieve 75 to 90 Gold Medals at the 33rd SEA Games, completing the assigned tasks.
Up to the 33rd SEA Games, after 20 years (since 2005), Vietnamese sports have always been in the top 3 countries when competing at the Southeast Asian Games.
Most recently, Vietnamese sports achieved outstanding results to top the 31st SEA Games (205 Gold Medals, 125 Silver Medals, 116 Bronze Medals) and the 32nd SEA Games (136 Gold Medals, 105 Silver Medals, 114 Bronze Medals). That result proves that in the Southeast Asian arena, Vietnamese sports have the foundation and preparation to achieve Gold Medals in expectation.
SEA Games 33 will take place in December 2025, and Vietnamese sports teams have half a year to prepare expertise. Currently, the atmosphere of training at the training points of the teams is very exciting, with the high determination of the players to conquer achievements and bring glory to the country.
