In Fluminense's 2-0 victory over America de Cali in the South American Cup C2 (Copa Sudamericana) at Maracana Stadium on the evening of August 19, Fabio made his 1,391st appearance in his career. This number was recorded by Guinness World Record Organization, surpassing Shilton's 1,390-match mark. Although Shilton insists he has only played 1,387 games, that record has been considered unstoppable for decades.
Immediately after the match, Fluminense held a ceremony to honor Fabio with a special souvenir shirt, commemorative board and portrait painting.
I am grateful to my family, friends and those who always accompany me. The most important thing is to be a good teammate. I believe that without God, nothing would come true, Fabio shared.
According to the International Federation of Football Statistics and History (IFFHS), Fabio's career spans across many clubs. He has 976 appearances for Cruzeiro, 235 appearances for Fluminense, 150 appearances for Vasco da Gama and 30 starts for Uniao Bandeirante. Among the players with the most appearances, he surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo (1,5287), Paul Bastock (1,5284) and Rogerio Ceni (1,5226).
Fabio was born in 1980 in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. Although he has never played for the national team, he has won 27 major and minor titles, including the 2004 Copa America with Brazil and the Copa Libertador with Fluminense.
