Sharing with the British media, Adams commented: "Arteta had a big decision to do this season, but he hasn't done it yet. That was giving Rice the captain's armband. Rice is my type of leader, and this could give Odegaard more freedom to play."
Odegaard joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in January 2021, and was later bought for $41 million. The Norwegian midfielder has scored 41 goals and assisted 41 times in 198 matches. From 2022-2023, he wore the captain's armband but the "Gunners" have not won a major title, finishing second in the Premier League for 3 consecutive seasons.
According to Adams, sometimes the coach has to choose a captain who "reflects his spirit and the club's spirit and can take the team to new heights." When asked if Rice reflects Arteta's style, he replied: "I think Rice is better than Arteta. To win the championship, you have to be like Jurgen Klopp or Sir Alex Ferguson, lead by example, show winning spirit and that is reflected in your captain".
Adams believes Rice has all the qualities of a championship leader such as perseverance, always ready to play all season and inspiring teammates.
"You have a player who plays every game, helps others fight enthusiastically and lays the foundation for a championship team. Rice can do that, Odegaard can't. Now Arteta, give him the captain's armband," he stressed.
In his career, Adams spent his entire 19 years playing professionally for Arsenal, winning 4 English championships and many other titles. He is considered one of the best centre-backs and the greatest leader in the history of English football.
