The roadmap for converting E10 gasoline is built step by step, not implemented suddenly
Information on the roadmap for using E10 gasoline will be applied from June 1, 2026, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan said that the Ministry of Industry and Trade has issued Circular No. 50/2025/TT-BCT dated November 7, 2025 stipulating the roadmap for applying the blending ratio of biofuels with traditional fuels in Vietnam, which includes regulations from June 1, 2026 for biofuel gasoline items distributed nationwide.
This roadmap is strictly implemented according to the Party and State's policy, including Resolution No. 55-NQ/TW of the Politburo on orientations for Vietnam's national energy development strategy to 2030, vision to 2045; Resolution No. 70-NQ/TW, dated August 20, 2025 of the Politburo on ensuring national energy security to 2030, vision to 2045. These documents all require the implementation of solutions to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, reduce emissions, and protect the environment.
Therefore, the official conversion of biofuel (E5RON92 and E10RON95) nationwide from June 1, 2026 is the next step to implement the biofuel roadmap in the spirit of Decision 53, completely in line with practical requirements, legal basis, and in accordance with the Party and Government's guidelines on energy conversion, building a green economy, and reducing carbon emissions.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan further explained that in the previous period, we applied both mineral gasoline and biofuel gasoline in parallel so that people had time to get used to it, the market had conditions to adapt, and businesses gradually completed distribution infrastructure, technology and supply. However, practice in many countries shows that if too many types of fuel are maintained simultaneously for a long time, many inadequacies will arise such as increased logistics costs, storage, distribution; causing difficulties for retail businesses; and at the same time reducing the effectiveness of green energy transition policies.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan affirmed: "We also want to emphasize that the transition roadmap is built step by step, with careful impact assessment, not implemented abruptly. In the process of implementation, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to coordinate with ministries, sectors, and businesses to ensure stable supply, fuel quality, consumer rights and especially, the Ministry will also continue to provide more transparent information for people to feel secure in using.
Most cars and motorbikes circulating in Vietnam can use E10 gasoline.
Regarding some concerns about the compatibility of car engines when using E10 gasoline, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan emphasized that the Ministry of Industry and Trade has coordinated with specialized agencies, universities, experts in engines and fuels, automobile and motorcycle manufacturing associations and related businesses to assess the compatibility of vehicles with E10 gasoline.
Through review, evaluation and international experience, it shows that most cars and motorbikes currently in circulation in Vietnam can use E10 gasoline according to the manufacturer's recommendations. In fact, E10 is currently widely used in many countries such as the US, Brazil, Thailand or the Philippines" - Deputy Minister Tan stated clearly.
In addition, Vietnam has also had a process of testing and practical deployment of E10 gasoline in the distribution system of some large enterprises before widespread deployment. To date, no scientific or official technical conclusions have been recorded showing that E5 and E10 gasoline have a common impact on vehicle engines.
However, for some vehicles that are too old, rarely used, or the fuel system has not been properly maintained, the Ministry of Industry and Trade recommends that people regularly check and maintain the fuel system, and use fuel according to the manufacturer's recommendations to ensure operating efficiency.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan affirmed: "In the roadmap, Circular 50 also clearly states: Firstly, switch to using E10 gasoline, and continue to maintain the distribution of E5RON92 gasoline. The main goal is to serve old vehicles that are not compatible with E10 gasoline. We have also estimated the roadmap for E5 gasoline to continue for another 5 years, meaning from now until 2030. This will ensure compatibility with all vehicles currently in circulation. The Ministry's point of view is that the development of biofuels must go hand in hand with the requirements of ensuring technical safety, fuel quality and consumer rights.
