Increase supply
Present at the BRGMart supermarket system on the morning of September 11, 2024, the reporter noted that the amount of goods was very abundant. Especially, on the shelves of fresh food such as meat, fish, eggs, vegetables of all kinds.
Sharing with Lao Dong, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien - Deputy General Director of BRGMart supermarket system - said that in recent days, the demand for shopping goods has increased sharply by about 70-80% compared to normal days. Especially instant food items (cakes, sausages, milk, canned food, cold cuts, instant noodles, dried noodles, pho, vermicelli, rice paper... purified water, mineral water...).
According to Ms. Hien, the demand for these items increased, partly due to people's need to stockpile, but also partly due to philanthropists and businesses doing charity work to support people affected by storm No. 3 and floods. For essential goods, rice, oil, fish sauce and fresh food, vegetables, meat, fish; tissues, toilet paper, people also bought an increase of about 30-35%.
“We have increased the quantity of goods by 30%. Due to the impact of storms, green vegetables are limited, but water spinach is still 100% available, other vegetables and leafy vegetables are available but less. Pork and chicken products have also increased by about 30%, the supermarket system has added many pork products, whole chickens to serve consumers. We ensure the supply, consumers do not worry about shortages” - Ms. Hien affirmed.
At the Big C and Go supermarket chains, the number of customers has also increased dramatically. This group has been stepping up the supply of goods to the North, aiming to fully supply goods to the provinces and cities affected by storm No. 3 (Yagi).
“GO! and Big C supermarket chains have increased their supply of goods and vegetables by 100% compared to normal days. Since last weekend, we have prepared additional trucks to deliver goods to the North. Previously, each truck from Da Lat to the Central and North was 40 tons/trip on average, now it has increased to 75-80 tons/trip” - Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Van - Communications Director of Central Retail Vietnam affirmed.
Mr. Pham Van Hung - Head of the Fresh Food Purchasing Team of MM Megamarket (MM) supermarket - also said: The supermarket system has increased food reserves due to concerns about possible supply chain disruptions if areas such as Hai Duong and Moc Chau are flooded due to storm Yagi.
“In response to information about storm No. 3, MM Mega Market has tripled the number of trucks transporting vegetables and fruits from the supply station in Lam Dong to the northern provinces (expected to be up to 40 tons of vegetables and fruits). Currently, MM ensures vegetables and fruits. Regarding meat, we have a large supply of pork because we have a pork purchasing and transit station right in Hanoi. From Hanoi, we will transport fresh goods to all provinces, especially Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Vinh, Ha Long...
On September 11, MM Mega Market rolled out the first relief truck, transporting 1,000 boxes of instant noodles and 300 boxes of mineral water (500mlx24 bottles) from Thang Long (Hanoi) to Lang Son" - Mr. Hung affirmed.
Determined to stabilize prices of goods and food
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, supermarket systems in Hanoi as well as northern provinces such as Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Hai Duong, Bac Giang... have abundant goods and unchanged prices.
A survey by Lao Dong reporters shows that the prices of rice and cereals remain stable: Jasmine Japanese rice, Dien Bien eight: 20,000 VND/kg, Du Huong, Bac Huong: 190,000 VND/10kg; pink peanuts: 70,000 VND/kg, red peanuts: 75,000 VND/kg... equivalent to the price before the storm.
At Big C, Go!, MM, BRGMart, and Aeon supermarkets, prices remain stable. Most of these supermarkets have increased the amount of fresh goods and vegetables to serve consumers.
“We try not to increase the selling price, because we have prepared the goods in advance with our partners in Da Lat. In addition, promotional programs to get good prices are still applied by GO!, Big C, Tops Market as usual, and we are also running a program to accompany Dak Lak farmers to sell pumpkins at a non-profit price - only 7,900 VND/kg, helping farmers consume agricultural products. These agricultural products are also transported to the North and sold at supermarkets GO!, Big C, Tops Market” - Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Van said.
In some traditional markets, there has been a situation of "price gouging" by small traders, especially for green vegetables and fresh foods. "We have to increase prices because the prices of vegetables and meat at the wholesale market have increased. Today I went to get the goods, the supplier announced that from tomorrow the prices will increase even more" - Ms. Tran Thi Hong, a food trader at Lane 122 Mai Dich (Cau Giay District, Hanoi) said.
