World coffee prices drop sharply
In the international market, the price of arabica coffee futures for September (KCU25) on the ICE US floor decreased by 11.6 cents/pound (‐3.92%), down to 284.2 cents/pound - the lowest level in 3 weeks. robusta futures for September on ICE Europe also fell $71/ton (‐2.09%).
The decline was mainly due to the increase in robusta inventories on the ICE exchange to 7,029 lots - the highest level in a year, along with speculative funds continuing to increase their fake selling position. The July 29 report from ICE showed that net sales of Robusta increased by 1,226 contracts, to 5,854 contracts the highest in two years.
According to the USDA semi-annual report, global coffee output in the 2025/26 crop year is expected to increase by 2.5% to a record of 178.68 million bags. Of which, Robusta output increased sharply by 7.9% to 81.66 million bags, offsetting arabica's 1.7% reduction to 97.02 million bags. End-of-season inventories are forecast to increase by 4.9% to 22.82 million bags, putting downward pressure on the market.
On the other hand, some organizations such as Volcafe warned that the global arabica market will be short of about 8.5 million bags in the 2025/26 crop year - the largest shortfall in the past 5 years.
