On July 29, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said that the Trump administration is pursuing a new policy, according to which agricultural products and natural resources that cannot be produced in the US - such as coffee, cocoa, mango, pineapple - can be exempted from import tax if the exporting country signs a trade agreement with the US.
Mr. Lutnick emphasized that this is a "reasonable and practical step", helping to reduce domestic consumption costs and promote bilateral trade. A typical example is the newly announced US-Indonesia Trade Agreement, according to which many tropical agricultural products such as coffee and cocoa can be subject to a tax rate of 0%. This policy is expected to expand exports to developing countries such as Vietnam, while contributing to curbing inflation in the US.
