Dien Bien - On fateful night, a village chief (26 years old) made a historic decision to help nearly 100 people evacuate before the flood arrived.

In the early morning of August 1, 72 households and more than 380 people in Hang Pu Xi village, Xa Dung commune, Dien Bien province were sleeping. Outside the weather, heavy rain still continues to fall on fragile, weak roofs...

At around 2:30 a.m., water began to flood into the house of Mr. Mua A Thi (26 years old) - Head of Hang Pu Xi village. If his feelings were not good, he immediately thought about the other side of the village, where the terrain was steep, near the stream, very dangerous...

Head of Hang Pu Xi village called households in the dangerous area to grasp the situation. The voice of a panicked person on the phone: "It was raining heavily, the water was flowing heavily..." - Mr. Thi recalled.

At around 3am, I decided to call the households in the danger zone to evacuate urgently. After that, I, the Party Cell Secretary and the local militia, urgently ran to the stream bank area to instruct the people to evacuate to a safe area" - Mr. Thi said.

On August 2, speaking with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Thi said that the evacuation that night took place very urgently, in just about 30 minutes. "Some people carry their children, young people take the elderly. All are towards higher, safer areas. There were 3 elderly people who refused to move, so I had to mobilize some healthy young people in the village to take turns carrying the elderly to safety" - Mr. Thi recounted.

According to the Head of Mua A Thi village, by 3:30 a.m. on August 1, about 94 people from more than 20 households had been gathered in safe locations.

According to statistics, the flash flood and landslide in Hang Pu Xi village, Xa Dung commune killed 2 people, buried 17 households with soil and rocks, completely swept away, and severely damaged 5 other households with soil and rocks.

When asked about his brave actions, the 26-year-old village chief just modestly said: "I don't dare to claim to be a hero. As the village chief, I am aware of my responsibility to protect the people....

Immediately after the fierce flood passed, Mr. Mua A Thi was busy coordinating with the authorities to urgently rescue and search for remaining assets to stabilize his life.

In the devastation of the historic flood, the 26-year-old village chief of Mua A Thi still clearly demonstrated his role as a solid support for the people of Hang Pu Xi village to overcome difficult days...

In recent days, floods and landslides in the North Central and Northern mountainous provinces have killed and left many people missing, houses, schools and maple blossoms were swept away and submerged in mud, affecting local production activities.
