The weather in Buon Ma Thuot city (Dak Lak) has turned cold these days. Local flower growers have to be on hand to take care of their plants so they bloom in time for Tet.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Cuong - a resident of Hoa Xuan commune, Buon Ma Thuot city - said that his family owns a 500m² flower garden, mainly growing orange chrysanthemums, egg chrysanthemums and seven-color chrysanthemums.
Since September 2024, his family has started lighting the flower garden, cutting leaves and pruning branches to make each pot more beautiful. Thanks to careful care, the flower pots are always green, with large and bright flowers. Currently, Mr. Cuong is waiting for traders to come and place orders.
At the chrysanthemum village of Khanh Xuan ward (Buon Ma Thuot city), many gardeners are worried because traders are slow to come to buy.
Mrs. Pham Thi Thu Huyen's family (group 8, Khanh Xuan ward) currently grows 1,500 pots of chrysanthemums of various kinds.
Taking care of the flower garden this year is quite difficult due to unfavorable weather, prolonged drizzle and high humidity, making the plants susceptible to fungal diseases. Investment costs increased while output was slow, making Ms. Huyen even more worried.
According to Ms. Huyen, every year in the 11th lunar month, traders come to deposit money to buy flowers. However, this year, the number of traders coming is very small, leaving thousands of flower pots of the family still unsold. She hopes that the remaining flowers will be sold soon so that the family can have a full Tet.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa - a trader - shared the reason for the delay in placing a deposit to buy chrysanthemums. According to him, this year the supply of chrysanthemums is abundant because many gardeners grow large quantities.
The cold weather also makes it more labor-intensive to bring flowers home early. In addition, he needs to research the market to avoid importing too much and not selling it all.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Phuc - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Khanh Xuan Ward, said that the area has about 40 households growing flowers, mainly chrysanthemums for Tet.
This year, the total number of flower pots planted in the area is estimated at about 15,000, an increase of 5,000 pots compared to last year. However, the consumption of chrysanthemums is quite slow, currently only about 70% of the flowers have been priced and deposited by traders.
Faced with this situation, many gardeners are focusing on taking care of their plants to make them flower beautifully, hoping to attract traders and sell them at a good price. The cold weather makes care even more important to ensure a favorable output.
