Nghe An currently has an area of over 16,486km2, a population of over 3.8 million people, with 17 districts, 2 towns and 1 city, 412 commune-level administrative units.

According to the latest draft that has just been submitted to the competent authority, after the arrangement, Nghe An plans to have only 130 communes and wards left - including 119 communes and 11 wards.

Up to now, districts, towns and cities have completed the plan to arrange commune-level administrative units and submitted it to the People's Committee of Nghe An province.

Accordingly, the naming of new commune-level administrative units is mainly based on the plan of using district names associated with serial numbers.

In addition, some localities have proposed to keep or rename them in the direction of honoring cultural and historical values. In which, Kim Lien and Cua Lo communes are two typical places that are proposed to keep the same name or have suitable renaming.
