On January 8, the Government Office announced that Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha signed Official Dispatch No. 07/TTg-CN recognizing Cao Lanh city as a type II urban area under Dong Thap province with the inner city area expanding to include My Ngai commune.
The Deputy Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Construction and the People's Committee of Dong Thap province to take full responsibility for the accuracy of the contents, data, information, order and procedures of the report on reviewing the classification of the urban area of Cao Lanh city expanding the inner city according to the criteria of a type II urban area under Dong Thap province mentioned above, ensuring compliance with the provisions of law and relevant regulations.
Cao Lanh is the provincial capital of Dong Thap province, located in the center of the province, about 155km west-southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. On January 22, 2020, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 155/QD-TTg recognizing Cao Lanh city as a class II urban area under Dong Thap province.
In terms of function and role, Cao Lanh city is a regional center that plays a role in promoting the socio-economic development of the Mekong Delta. The city has 8 wards and 7 communes with a total natural area of 108.09 km2.
By the end of 2023, the total urban population will be about 184,000 people, the urban population ratio will reach 53.29%. The total urban population density will reach 2,257 people/km2.

Implementing the Party and State's policy stipulated in Resolution No. 37-NQ/TW dated December 24, 2018 of the Politburo on the arrangement of district and commune-level administrative units, Cao Lanh city has arranged the administrative unit of My Ngai commune into Ward 11 in the period of 2023-2025 according to regulations.
My Ngai commune has a natural area of 6.19 km2 and a population of 5,312 people. Ward 11 has a natural area of 8.24 km2 and a population of 13,340 people. My Ngai ward (new) was established on the basis of merging My Ngai commune into ward 11.
