On the morning of April 25, the People's Council of Can Tho City, term X, 2021-2026, opened its 20th Session (special session).

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Standing Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Council Pham Van Hieu said that this session took place during the time the city and the whole country were focusing on implementing the Party and State's policies on the arrangement and consolidation of agencies in the political system, building local governments under the 2 -level model (provincial and commune level).
This is a revolution in organizing the apparatus, a political task of special importance to the country and the city. This session is a very important session, the City People's Council will discuss, consider and decide on a number of urgent contents.
Accordingly, the city plans to approve the policy on the arrangement of provincial and commune-level administrative units according to Resolution No. 18 dated October 25, 2017 of the Central Committee on continuing to innovate and reorganize the apparatus of the political system to be streamlined and operate effectively and efficiently.
The City People's Council reviews and comments on detailed delivery, adjusting the medium-term public investment plan for the period 2021-2025; Detailed assignment of public investment plan in 2025 local budget sources; approving the settlement of Can Tho city budget in 2023; ... to perform personnel work under the authority of the City People's Council as prescribed.

According to the Draft Project on arranging and merging provincial-level administrative units, establishing Can Tho City under the Central Government on the basis of merging administrative units of Soc Trang province, Hau Giang province and Can Tho city.
Can Tho City has 6,400.83 km2 (reaching 426.722% of the standard). Population of 4,061,292 people (reaching 406.12% of the standard), 103 administrative units (31 wards and 72 communes).
Adjacent administrative units are Vinh Long province, Ca Mau province (after the arrangement), An Giang province (after the arrangement), Dong Thap province (after the arrangement).
The political - administrative center is located in the current city of Can Tho.
