Prime Minister directs overcoming landslides that killed 5 workers in Lai Chau

On the evening of May 16, the Prime Minister issued a telegram of direction related to the landslide that killed 5 workers at the hydropower plant in Lai Chau.

The Prime Minister sent the most profound and condolences to the family members of the victims; Ask the Chairman of Lai Chau People's Committee to continue coordinating with the Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee (the locality with citizens who are victims of the landslide) and leaders of relevant agencies focus on directing and deploying the search and rescue work, overcoming the consequences of landslides with the most urgent and timely spirit.

Chairman of Lai Chau People's Committee directly directs and mobilizes a centralized force to search and rescue those who are still missing (note to ensure safety for the forces to participate in search and rescue); organize free treatment for injured people; directing the authorities to urgently coordinate the investigation, clearly identify the cause of the incident to promptly learn from experience in ensuring construction safety, strictly handle the responsibility of organizations and individuals (if any violations) in accordance with the law.

The Chairmen of the People's Committees of Lai Chau and Nghe An provinces promptly directed and organized visits, encouragement, and immediate support for families of victims in accordance with regulations; coordinated and supported the victims' families to take good care of the victims according to local customs.

The Minister of National Defense and the Minister of Public Security directed and mobilized necessary forces and means, coordinated with the People's Committee of Lai Chau province to urgently search for victims and quickly overcome the consequences of the landslide incident.

Along with that, the Prime Minister requested the Minister of Agriculture and Environment to organize timely monitoring and forecasting information on weather and natural disasters, especially heavy rain, the risk of landslides, flash floods so that local authorities, authorities and people can proactively prevent and avoid them;

Direct localities to review, update plans and proactively deploy natural disaster prevention and control work in accordance with the actual situation in the locality, promptly detect areas at risk of landslides and flash floods to proactively evacuate and relocate, ensuring the safety of people's lives.

Previously, as reported by Lao Dong Newspaper, the unfortunate incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. on May 16. During the construction process, the contractor (Dung Phuc Loc Construction Investment Joint Stock Company headquartered in Nghe An) hired a number of local workers.

At the time of the accident, workers were clearing the foundation holes under the hydroelectric dam, the road's negative slope was eroded, and rocks and soil flowed down, burying many people.

Accordingly, 5 people are missing (determined to have died) including: Tan Su May (born in 1980); Ly Lao San (born in 2008); Tan U May (born in 1984); Phan Lao Lo (born in 2009), all residing in Lan Nhi Thang village, Si Lo Lau commune, Phong Tho district and Luong Van Ha (born in 1987, residing in Que Phong district, Nghe An province).

The 4 injured patients were taken to Lai Chau General Hospital for emergency treatment. By the evening of May 16, the victims' health had temporarily stabilized.
