Speaking at the ceremony, Phnom Penh Mayor Khuong Sreng expressed his sincere gratitude to the Government, people of Vietnam and the Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia for coordinating and supporting the construction of the Cambodia - Vietnam Friendship School, a very important project in the Phnom Penh suburban area.
This meaningful activity takes place during the state visit of General Secretary To Lam and the high-level Vietnamese delegation to Cambodia and at a time when the two countries are heading towards the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with many activities in the coming time.
The Cambodia - Vietnam Friendship School project is being built on the campus of Samdech Techo Hun Sen Dangkor Primary and Secondary School on Street 217, Phnom Penh city.
This land area was once used as a logistics base of the Vietnamese Volunteer Army after the liberation of January 7, 1979, and then continued to be used as a school to this day.
With historical significance closely associated with the Vietnamese Volunteer Army and in order to preserve and strengthen the strong friendly relationship between the two countries in the spirit of "connecting youth, connecting generations and connecting the future", the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports decided to rename the school to Cambodia - Vietnam Friendship School.
Cambodia - Vietnam Friendship School currently has 11 learning buildings, including 54 classrooms, with 135 officials, teachers and about 6,000 students from preschool, primary to secondary school levels.
With the support of the Government and people of Vietnam, in the coming time, the school will be renovated and built with many important infrastructure items to improve facilities standards, modernize the learning environment and increase the ability to receive students.
The new items include 2 multi-purpose 2-story buildings, 8 3-story buildings, with a total of about 200 classrooms, 2 dining areas, and many other auxiliary works. The expected construction time is from 8 to 12 months.
