The Minister of Home Affairs said that the arrangement of provincial administrative units will be carried out later and there is currently no policy to merge provinces and cities.

On December 4, according to information from the Ministry of Home Affairs, issues of streamlining and reorganizing the apparatus are emphasized in the tasks of implementing work in December 2024 of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Streamlining the organizational apparatus will go hand in hand with streamlining the payroll and restructuring the team of qualified and capable staff.

Minister of Home Affairs Pham Thi Thanh Tra said that the arrangement of the State administrative block will be a premise for the Ministry of Home Affairs to continue advising and guiding the arrangement of the administrative apparatus of local governments.

The information was released by the Ministry of Home Affairs in the context of recent information spreading on social networks about specific plans to merge provinces and cities. This information has received great attention from public opinion.

However, VNA quoted Minister of Home Affairs Pham Thi Thanh Tra as saying that in the immediate future, the restructuring of the apparatus will be implemented at the central level.

"The arrangement of provincial administrative units will be carried out later and there is currently no policy to immediately merge provinces and cities," the Minister of Home Affairs affirmed.

Previously, at the end of November 2024, the Ministry of Home Affairs sent a document to the Ministry of Public Security requesting to handle false information about the province merger.

On behalf of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Chief of Office and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Home Affairs Vu Dang Minh sent a document to the Ministry of Public Security to coordinate and direct cyber security agencies to review and handle the dissemination of false information that causes public confusion and affects social stability related to the merger of provinces and centrally-run cities.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the merger of provincial administrative units is not only based on the criteria of area and population but also on other criteria such as national security, sovereignty protection, geopolitical position, regional planning, national and community culture. Especially to ensure stability for socio-economic development.
