LD 24068: 9-year-old boy collects scrap metal to support his sick father

NGUYÊN ANH |

Although only 9 years old, Danh Thanh Duoc is the main breadwinner, paying for his father's living expenses, medicine, and daily meals.

He used to have a complete family, with a father, mother and 2 brothers, but the past 7 years have been a series of sad and hard days for 9-year-old boy Danh Thanh Duoc (residing in Bao Tram hamlet, Nam Yen commune, An Bien district, Kien Giang province).

Since the day his father fell ill due to overwork, unable to carry things or earn money, and his mother left, his father and his brothers had to work harder to make a living. Over time, the brothers grew up and had their own lives, and Duoc stayed with his father.

Every day when the school bell rings, Duoc rushes home to be with his father. Instead of having a delicious meal, playing and relaxing with his family like his peers, he has to rush into the kitchen to cook. Taking advantage of all his free time, Duoc goes to collect scrap metal to earn more money to take care of the life of the two of them.

The money from collecting scrap metal for 2 days of selling is about 30,000 VND, saved to buy medicine for father and daily food.

Lack of material things and having to work hard at an early age made the 9-year-old boy small and skinny.

Despite his difficult circumstances, Duoc has never been discouraged or complained, but has always tried his best. His academic results are only average, but Duoc always tries to go to school regularly. His gentleness, love of learning, and filial piety have made many people love and admire him.

Confided: "I hope to be able to work to earn money to take care of my father, cure his illness, study well, have a stable job to help my father have a better life."

Mr. Danh Dep (born in 1979) - father of Duoc shared that although he loves his son very much, he can't do anything more. "I feel so sad when I see my son struggling so early, he is so young, at school age but because of the family burden he has to suffer like that. Being a father but not being able to take care of his children, I feel so sad", Mr. Dep sighed...

Mr. Dep said that in August 2024, he was fortunate to receive attention from local authorities and the Fatherland Front, and to mobilize benefactors to donate the house, so that the father and son had a safe place to eat and sleep. The previous house was severely degraded, and with the current situation, there was no way to have money to repair it, let alone build a new one.

“I wish my son would receive support so he can continue his studies. Right now, all I can do is try to study one day at a time. The road to study is still long, and he really needs help to pursue it and have a better future,” Mr. Dep confided.

In the past, local authorities have helped but their capacity is limited, so we hope to receive support from kind-hearted people near and far to help my father and I have a stable life in the long term.

Mr. Ngo Tran Khai - Head of the Vietnam Fatherland Front in Bao Tram Hamlet, Nam Yen Commune said: "Duoc is both obedient, filial and very studious. Despite the difficulties, Duoc still goes to school. But with the strength of a 9-year-old child, it is impossible to shoulder the burden of caring for both father and son, both medical treatment and living and studying expenses. The locality hopes that everyone can help Duoc to have the expenses to continue his long-term studies, have a better life, and have the things that a child should enjoy."
