The temporary small house in Hai Tien commune, Ninh Binh province is where Mr. Nguyen Van Chuong (born in 1988) and Ms. Pham Thi Sinh (born in 1992) and their 3 young children live.
After many years of marriage, Ms. Sinh's job as a garment worker and Mr. Chuong's tailoring job are enough to take care of his children.
However, a sudden incident happened to the small family. In March 2024, when she saw many unusual signs on her body, Ms. Sinh went to the doctor and learned that she had leukemia.
"To avoid spending money on treatment, I asked to go home and buy herbal medicine for treatment. After a period of taking herbal medicine, my condition became worse and I had to be hospitalized for emergency care. The whole family has put all their money into treatment for me, so the economy is exhausted," Ms. Sinh said in tears.
Since Ms. Sinh started to get sick, the whole family has only known Mr. Chuong. Except for the times when his wife had to be hospitalized for chemotherapy and needed someone to take care of her, he tried to work for hire in the remaining days to have money to take care of his wife's medicine and raise 3 young children.
Mr. Chuong said that although his wife has health insurance, the cost of chemicals and specific drugs is not included in the insurance's payment list and traveling to Hanoi is very expensive for each treatment. To have money to treat his wife, Mr. Chuong had to sell the land where his family lived. With no place to live, the whole family moved to her grandmother's house together.
"Since we learned about the disease, my wife has undergone 5 chemotherapy sessions, each of which lasted from one to one and a half months in hospital. Every time I receive chemicals, my wife and I go to Hanoi to conveniently take care of and send the children to their grandmothers to look after," said Mr. Chuong.
As time passed, Mr. Chuong's family's economy became more exhausted and they fell into a deadlock. The neighbors saw that Mr. Chuong and his wife's situation was difficult, and each person helped a little.
According to the leader of Hai Tien Commune People's Committee, Mr. Nguyen Van Chuong's family situation is currently very difficult because his wife has cancer, which requires long-term and expensive treatment costs. Every time there is a support package, the local government pays attention and proposes to help the family.
