LD25080: A 70-year-old man intends to refuse treatment because his house is too poor

NGUYỄN LY |

HCMC - While traveling around the house, Mr. Nguyen Van Thiet unfortunately fell and had to undergo surgery, but because he was so poor, he once intended to stop treatment.

At the age of 70, Mr. Nguyen Van Thiet (Dong Nai province) is almost unable to work. The elderly couple makes a living thanks to their three daughters, all of whom are workers with unstable incomes. "Now my wife and I can't do anything anymore, we worry about daily expenses. It also takes medicine..., Mr. Thiet said slowly.

The incident happened one evening, when Mr. Thiet fell in the house, no one knew. The children had to leave work at 9pm and return home. Seeing their father in pain, they rushed to take him to the hospital. The doctor diagnosed him with a broken cervical vertebrae and needed immediate surgery. But at that time, the family was shocked to discover that his health insurance card had expired, because he was less likely to get sick, so no one paid attention.

The cost of the surgery was announced at about 81,000,000 VND. This is too big a number for the three female workers, each of whom is raising a small child, some have just had a cesarean section, and are still in poor health. His daughter said: "We only have the money to collect and borrow at interest everywhere to pay 51,000,000 VND. The doctor was thuong touch, still operating on his father. Now there are still tens of millions left, we still cannot have them to pay the hospital...".

Mr. Thiet confessed that there were times when he thought about asking to go home when he heard that the surgery cost was too high. "If it were not possible, I would have to go home... But I asked the doctor to help, and my children borrowed money to get a loan so they could be saved" - Mr. Thiet said.

Currently, a daughter has to temporarily quit her job to take care of her father in the hospital. The remaining two people are in poor health and cannot be cared for. "Everyone is suffering, doctor..., but if our father is in pain, we are in trouble," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Thoa, Mr. Thiet's daughter.

After the surgery, Mr. Thiet recovered but still could not stand up, the pain was still a lot. The family continues to struggle every day to take care of medicine and the remaining expenses.

Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Dr. My Son Hoang Bao - Department of Surgery and Trauma - Le Van Thinh Hospital, said that the patient was admitted to the hospital in a state of great pain after slipping and falling at home, causing severe damage to the hips and thighs. The diagnostic results determined that the patient had a broken cervical vertebrae, a severe injury, commonly found in the elderly.

According to Dr. Bao, the cervical vertebrae injury has four levels. For older patients, the optimal treatment choice is hip replacement, which helps restore movement and limit complications such as prolonged sleeping such as pneumonia, acute ulcers or malnutrition. "If the surgery is delayed, the risk of death will increase very high. Therefore, the hospital decided to intervene early for the patient, the doctor emphasized.

The biggest problem is that patients no longer have valid health insurance cards. Therefore, all expenses from the joint (about more than 40 million VND), excluding other expenses such as: blood transfusion, surgery and post-operative care must be paid according to the service level. The total cost of treatment, according to Dr. Bao, is about 85,000,000 VND. The family has paid 51,000,000 VND for the hospital fees, currently lacking 34,000,000 VND.

Faced with the family's difficult circumstances, the hospital has reviewed support sources and considered appropriate reductions and fees. When patients are unable to pay, the hospital always finds every way to ensure they are treated promptly, said Dr. Bao.
