Morning to school, afternoon to work
Born and raised in a poor family in Doc village, Khoen On commune, Lai Chau province, Me Van Hac (born in 2005) early realized that only the path of learning could help him escape poverty and change his life.
Studying at Phu Tho College of Electrical Engineering and Forestry, Hac studied and worked, saving every penny to support himself.
“During the day I go to school, in the evening I take advantage of working part-time until 1-2 am before returning home. Because the study schedule is not too tight, I try to work to earn extra income,” she said. That pace of life has been repeated for many years, as a way for me to silently carry my own dream.
Before that, Hac was always a healthy young man, able to work at high intensity without complaining of fatigue. However, unexpected events struck in his final year, when he went on an internship in Bac Ninh and worked in the night shift.
After about two weeks of working at night and then switching to the day shift, I saw that my eyes and skin began to turn clearly yellow, abnormal yellow, so I worriedly went to the Bac Ninh Provincial General Hospital for examination. Here, I was diagnosed with stage 4 cirrhosis" - Hac choked up.

The shock came too quickly for a young man who had just turned 20 years old. After a few days of treatment, due to the severe progression of the disease, he was transferred to Bach Mai Hospital. Here, through many in-depth tests, doctors determined that Hac had Wilson's disease - copper metabolism disorder, F4 cirrhosis, accompanied by severe blood clotting disorder.
In the midst of illness, family circumstances made the story even more heartbreaking. On the day of admission, Hac was almost penniless. "At that time, I didn't have money, so I had to call home to ask my parents to borrow 5 million VND to pay the hospital fees in advance," he recalled.
In the countryside, my parents are over 60 years old, farmers, illiterate, and often sick. The burden of making a living makes it almost impossible for them to go down to take care of their children. Hac's two older sisters and one younger sister also have difficult personal circumstances, just enough to take care of their own lives.
Even so, amidst adversity, humanity still quietly supported him. The school, teachers and many kind hearts joined hands to support. But ironically, when he was confused about his illness, Hac was deceived by bad guys and lost more than 27 million VND - a small amount of money he had just received from everyone's help.
Wishing you another chance to live
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Ms. Tran Thi Thuy Lan - Principal of Phu Tho College of Electrical Engineering and Forestry - said that Hac is a good student, lives responsibly and always knows how to think for others.
For lunch, I eat at school, but for dinner, it is often more difficult to give a meal to a friend. As for myself, I work part-time in the evening and eat temporarily outside" - Ms. Lan shared.
Immediately after grasping the situation, the school launched a donation campaign among all officials, lecturers, and students, and at the same time called for support from the community. To date, the amount donated is about 126 million VND from teachers, friends and social relationships.
In addition, through charity groups, the school mobilized an additional 145 million VND, which was directly transferred into the hospital fees for him.

Currently, Hac is still being treated at Bach Mai Hospital in an unstable health condition. The family has people come down for testing to donate liver, but it is not appropriate.
According to the female principal, although the school and family have tried their best, the treatment cost is still a very heavy burden. "We will continue to call in as much as possible to accompany her" - Ms. Lan said.
