When the Vietnamese music stage steps onto the big screen

NGỌC DỦ |

More and more concerts of Vietnamese artists are extended their life cycle by film versions. However, the revenue gap shows that not every successful concert continues to win when it enters theaters.

On September 10th, "Soobin live concert movie: All-rounder" officially premiered nationwide. The film is made from three nights of Soobin's "All-rounder" concert in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, attracting a total of more than 40,000 spectators. Each night, the male singer performs about 30 songs, combining singing, dancing and playing musical instruments.

Soobin is not the first Vietnamese artist to bring concerts to the big screen. Before him, Son Tung M-TP, My Tam, Hoang Thuy Linh, Ha Anh Tuan and the program "Hello Brother" all developed film products from music stages.

From one night of performance to many products

Son Tung M-TP is one of the pioneering artists with "Sky tour movie" in 2020. The film recreates the tour in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Hanoi, combining performances with behind-the-scenes images. The film grossed over 11.6 billion VND.

In 2023, My Tam put the journey of performing the "Tri Am" liveshow into the movie "Time Keeper". The work reached 12.3 billion VND after about 10 days of screening. After that, the female singer continued to release the "Tri Am" liveshow disc, with the first 6,000 copies sold out in just a few hours.

By 2025, "Hello Brother: The villain creates a hero" reached 15.4 billion VND, becoming the highest-grossing Vietnamese concert film at that time, surpassing "Time Keeper". The work also maintained its screenings for the fifth week.

Going further than the story of selling another type of ticket, concert movie helps extend the life cycle of large investments in stage, sound, lighting... When filmed methodically, materials from a few nights of performance can continue to become movies, performance videos, online content or products for the fandom.

Ha Anh Tuan chose a different direction with "Chân trời rực rỡ", developed from the live concert of the same name held in Ninh Binh in 2023. The film not only recreates the stage but also expands to the story of culture, people and origins.

This shows that concert movie in Vietnam is having many approaches: recreating performance experiences, telling behind-the-scenes stories or using concerts as a starting point for a broader documentary.

Not every "ticket-sold" concert wins in theaters

While "Hello Brother" reached 15.4 billion VND and "Time Keeper" reached 12.3 billion VND, Hoang Thuy Linh's "Vietnamese concert film: We are Vietnamese" only grossed more than 200 million VND during its release in 2025.

Ha Anh Tuan's "Chân trời rực rỡ" also only reached more than 500 million VND after 10 days of screening at the end of 2025. Before the movie was released, the male singer said he did not put much emphasis on revenue, viewed the work as a way to preserve memories and dedicated the producer's revenue to the program "Như chưa hề có cuộc chia ly".

The differentiation shows that the attraction of live concerts does not automatically turn into box office attraction. Therefore, recording a beautiful stage is not necessarily enough to convince the audience to buy tickets for the second time. The film needs to answer two questions: What else will people who have attended concerts see and what reasons do people who have never attended have to go to the cinema?

Unannounced behind-the-scenes, pressure behind the stage, moments that the audience has never seen, or an independent storytelling structure that can create new value. Conversely, if the film mainly gathers performances that have appeared on social networks, the appeal will decrease.

This is also Soobin's challenge when "All-rounder" is released in theaters. His advantage is that the fan community is active after a series of concerts with more than 40,000 spectators. But the box office will show whether that heat can continue to be transformed into a different format.

Revenue differences from several hundred million to tens of billions of VND show that Vietnamese movie concerts are still in the testing phase. If audiences continue to accept it, this may become a new market; conversely, products are still mainly serving the fan community.
